Besides going out dancing, we have managed to visit a few more cultural institutions....such as the racetrack.
It was a great learning experience, to figure out how the betting works, how to place bets and how to read the odds.  Ultimately, none of us won.  But I only lost 15 pesos! The equivalent of 5$ and that lasted for four hours of entertainment!!!  I should have placed a bet on the longshot Nocturno but decided against it at the last minute, prefering the favorite instead.  As usual, Nocturno kicked ass and won!  I learned my lesson, only bet according to how cool the names are and ignore the odds....!
The Obelisk is loated directly downtown and the largest street in the world surrounds it.  Sixteen lanes of traffic makes this street craziness. Especially because the lines on the road mean absolutely nothing!
A brief word about the architecture and layout of Buenos Aires...
There are several neighborhoods and the oldest is San Telmo, with colonialesque architecture and cobblestone streets.  There is an antiques fair that blows the mind on Sundays.

Next is Microcentro, or downtown, where all the business is conducted.  Right near it is Congreso, where ´Casa Rosada´ or the Argentinian equivalent to the White House is.  Two opposing political parties, the red and white, reconciled and the result was a compromise of pink, thus, the ¨Pink House´ was created.

Further North is Recoleta, where all the rich people fled (from San Telmo) early in the century during a yellow fever epidemic.  Very residential and upscale, but houses the Recoleta Cemetary where Evita is buried.  The Cemetary is a popular tourist spot and it is CRAZY.  See more pictures on the next few pages for confirmation of the lengths people will go to when interring their remains.

Even more north is our area of Palermo, very very hip and has a great mix of residential and convenient commercial establishments.  The botanical garden, Japanese Gardens, Central Park are all within walking distance.

The subte unites all these areas and it only .70 centavos per ride.  There are many other neighborhoods- Puerto Madero (up and coming new chic area on the docks where the expensive restaurants are now popping up), La Boca (the ´poorer´ area that houses the stadium for the same named soccer team but has tons of colorful houses and character)

We love all these places and I am working on knowing most of the areas before I leave!

STARTING GOALS-
1. Find an apartment
2. Research Language Schools
3. Shopping for replacement items(!)
4. Pilates/Tango/     Salsa/Yoga Classes
5. Sightsee (?)
The picketeros, or strikers, often target busy sections of city and shut down traffic.  This time the bus drivers parked all the buses down the intersection and just left them there. It was a crazy sight.
